The character and plot are as good as the last two books and there's a decent sequel hook at the end (when I was wondering if this would by the end of the series), but at the same time, it doesn't really have much that feels like it would be too fun to read over and over again, so why bother spending so much money on the book. His Alex Rider series made him known as one of the most seminal children's authors of the last decades. The English author and screenwriter has also been involved in numerous hugely successful television productions such as Foyle's War, Poirot, and Midsomer Murders exhibiting his singular talent in creating alluring fictitious worlds and imaginative plotlines that demand the audiences' rigorous attention. Horowitz made his breakthrough in crime fiction with the acclaimed Magpie Murders, a novel paying tribute to the respected mystery writers of the English tradition. Its rare for me to give up on a book, but give up I have. The quality of the writing is very childlike, I had to keep reminding myself that this wasn't a book for teenagers. The result is addictive and a great read. This third book in the Hawthorne series did not disappoint! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Madeleine C-W -- Love This Series : Somewhat serendipitously the book arrived and I started reading it and finished it outside over the recent two day heatwave. Living in Guernsey, I happen to know Alderney quite well and on a trip there in June was told that AH had been staying there and his next book would be set there. I have read and enjoyed the previous two books in the Hawthorne Horowitz collaboration and how AH is always upstaged by the enigmatic Daniel Hawthorne. Off they fly to Alderney for a literary festival of which the fellow participants are a motley and disparate group. Tensions soon appear evident amongst some of the residents over a proposed power line between Northern France and the UK to be run through Alderney, which results in murder. From a sentence at the end of the book it seemed to me that this series will continue; I do hope so. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 9, 2021 )
